That recent move towards Bluegrey cattle has revealed a downside. After ten years breeding Galloways, the change in direction called for a new bull which has been much discussed on this blog. “Oswald” the Whitebred Shorthorn arrived from Alnwick and set the herd to rights – and to be clear, I have no backward glance in this direction. He’s the proper man for the job, and I can’t wait to see his calves. But it has left me with a spare part – the much vaunted (but suddenly defunct) white Galloway bull who has been working well these last four years. I can certainly justify the cost and upkeep of a single bull, but the idea of keeping two is crazy – not least for the sake of easy management and the hope of a peaceful life.
